A septuagenarian, Madam Rachael Bamidele, has been killed during a communal clash, involving Aagba and Oko communities in Surulere Local Government, Oyo State.
The violent confrontation, which erupted on April 5, 2025, resulted in the destruction of nine houses and the loss of property valued in the millions of naira.
Witnesses described the attack as a calculated and systematic assault, aimed particularly at individuals involved in a long-standing land dispute. The confrontation sent residents fleeing to neighbouring communities for safety as the violence raged for several hours.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, has confirmed the tragic loss of life and the destruction of property.
He stated that nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while three unregistered Boxer motorcycles have been recovered.
The police have also deployed specialised units to restore order and ensure the safety of returning residents.
“The incident, which forced villagers to desert the village, was allegedly perpetrated by residents of a neighboiring community over a long-standing dispute over land.
“Following the recent developments, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, swiftly deployed the Command’s specialised intelligence and tactical assets, including a unit of PMF officers, to the village to ensure public safety.
“This prompt response brought about a restoration of normalcy, allowing villagers to return to their homes and resume daily activities without fear of harassment or intimidation.
“Investigations led to the apprehension of one Salawudeen Ismaila, aged 33, a native of neighbouring Oko community, and eight other suspects, as well as the recovery of three unregistered Boxer motorcycles.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other known suspects who remain at large. The indicted suspects will soon appear in court.
“The Oyo State Police Command has also reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on acts of brigandage and unlawful self-help, assuring the public of its dedication to maintaining peace and order”.
