Lafarge Africa Plc has reinforced its commitment to gender inclusivity with the graduation of a new cohort of female truck drivers under its Women-on-Wheels (WoW) initiative. The milestone event took place at the Lafarge Driving Institute in Ewekoro, Ogun State, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, marking another significant step in fostering diversity within the transport and logistics industry.
The Women-on-Wheels initiative is a testament to Lafarge Africa’s unwavering dedication to creating opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated sectors. The event was graced by key stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), industry leaders, and community dignitaries, all of whom commended the programme’s far-reaching impact.
In his keynote address, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, underscored the significance of the initiative, stating, “At Lafarge Africa, we are committed to investing in transformative programmes that empower women to excel. The Women-on-Wheels programme is a cornerstone of our commitment to gender inclusion, equipping certified female truck drivers with the skills and expertise to contribute meaningfully to our logistics operations. This initiative is a game changer in the transport industry, and we remain deeply invested in its success.”
Osaze Aghatise, Logistics Director at Lafarge Africa Plc, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, emphasizing its role in driving gender equality and fostering greater representation for women.

Today, we celebrate another group of remarkable women joining their ranks, reinforcing our commitment to safety and operational excellence on Nigeria’s roads.”
The WoW initiative is designed to provide women with in-depth technical training, road safety education, and hands-on experience in operating heavy-duty vehicles. In collaboration with accredited driving partners and safety organizations, Lafarge Africa has created a robust curriculum that ensures its graduates are equipped to excel in the transport industry.
Honourable Adijat Adeleye-Oladapo, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Ogun State, lauded the initiative for its transformative impact. “This programme is more than just a training exercise—it is an economic empowerment initiative that provides women with tangible career opportunities, reduces unemployment, and advances gender equality in Nigeria. Lafarge Africa’s steadfast commitment to this cause is commendable, and today’s graduates serve as a beacon of what is possible when women are given the right support and training.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Adebola Sofela, Commissioner for Industry, Trade & Investment, Ogun State, represented by Mr. Olalekan Eniolawun, Director of Geological Services at the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment, applauded Lafarge Africa for championing the inclusion of women in logistics. “The company is setting a precedent in empowering young women to embrace new opportunities in an industry that has long been male-dominated. These graduates are taking on a bold challenge, and we are immensely proud of their determination and success.”
Akinwumi Fasakin, Sector Commander of the Ogun State Command of the FRSC, also commended the initiative, stating, “Lafarge Africa’s commitment to gender diversity is truly commendable. To our graduates, your resilience and dedication are inspiring. You are trailblazers, proving that women can thrive in the transport sector, and your achievements today will encourage many others to follow in your footsteps.”
The ceremony also recognized outstanding performers from the graduating class, with Shotayo Olajumoke, Adibe Favour, and Yaya Rukayat Olabisi receiving special accolades for their excellence throughout the training. Adibe Favour Ozioma, one of the top graduates, expressed her excitement, saying, “This programme has been a life-changing experience for me. It has given me the confidence and skills to excel in an industry that once seemed out of reach. I am proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative.”
Since its inception in 2019, the Women-on-Wheels initiative has successfully trained and certified over 100 female truck drivers, fostering safer and more inclusive road transport operations. Currently, Lafarge Africa boasts 36 female drivers in its workforce, with 17 new graduates from Ewekoro joining their ranks. Additionally, another 30 women are set to graduate from the Calabar training centre in April, further strengthening the company’s commitment to expanding gender diversity in the logistics sector.
