Abia State is set to host the 1st Abia State Para Badminton International Championship and the All African Para Badminton Championship from Tuesday, September 30, to Thursday, October 16, 2025.
Governor Alex Otti has inaugurated the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and Local Organising Committee (LOC) to oversee the events.
At the inauguration in Government House, Umuahia, Otti, represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, praised Nigeria’s sports managers. He said his administration aims to make Abia known for both enterprise and athletic excellence. Also, he urged sports managers to focus on grassroots development, training, and national unity.
Otti encouraged committee members to keep scouting talent, mentoring young players, and working with schools and local clubs. “Let Abia be known not only for its enterprise but for its athletic excellence.
“I applaud your efforts so far and urge you not to relent. Continue to scout for talent, mentor young players, and collaborate with schools and local clubs to keep the sports alive and vibrant,” he said.
He commended the Badminton Federation of Nigeria’s leadership for promoting the sport in Abia and nationwide. “Through your hard work, strategic planning, and passion, you have laid a strong foundation for a sport that promotes physical fitness, mental agility, and social cohesion,” he said.
Nwaobilor Ananaba, the state Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, noted that sports in Abia were nearly extinct before Otti’s administration. Thanks to the governor’s support, the state is now thriving in sports. He highlighted hosting these championships as proof of Otti’s success and thanked the Badminton Federation of Nigeria for its collaboration.
Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, praised Otti’s visionary leadership. He said hosting the championships positions Abia as a leader in sports development nationally and internationally.
Samuel Ekeoma, National Coordinator of the Para Badminton Federation of Nigeria, called Abia the bedrock of para badminton in Africa. The MOC, chaired by Deputy Governor Emetu, and the LOC each have 16 members.
