From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris has donated N50 million to support the families of vigilantes killed and those injured during an attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits on Sunday, April 6.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during a condolence visit to Yola District in Augie Local Government Area, where he expressed sympathy for the victims’ families.
Describing the donation as a modest gesture, Idris emphasized that it was intended to ease the burden on the bereaved and injured, not to compensate for their tragic losses. Visibly shaken, he condemned the persistent attacks, attributing them to weak border security in neighboring states.
“We have been doing our best, unlike our neighbors,” he said. “These bandits exploit the lack of proactive measures there, infiltrating Kebbi to wreak havoc and then escaping.”
He urged residents and vigilantes to avoid chasing bandits, advising them to leave such pursuits to security agencies to prevent further loss of life. Expressing grief over the destruction, Idris reaffirmed his commitment to sparing no expense to ensure the safety of Kebbi’s citizens. “We will not despair or relent until every part of Kebbi is safe for all,” he vowed, noting progress in securing Kebbi South and pledging to extend peace statewide.
The governor also denounced unpatriotic individuals allegedly aiding bandits as informants, calling their actions disgraceful. The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mohammed Mera, praised Idris for the timely financial aid and his security efforts, reinforcing the call for civilians to steer clear of direct confrontations with bandits.
Augie Local Government Chairman Alhaji Yahaya Augie hailed the governor’s swift response, both in aiding victims and tackling security threats. He encouraged residents to share intelligence with authorities rather than engaging bandits themselves.
The attack on Sunday targeted villages including Garu, Murai, Unguwar Ladan, Unguwar Mai Rakumi, Unguwar Mai Turu, and Binnani. The bandits rustled cattle and ambushed vigilantes attempting to pursue them, resulting in multiple deaths.
