The inaugural BAO Boat Race saw impressive performances across various categories.
Five-year-old Jothan Japhet stole the show in the kids’ Open Water swimming event, finishing first ahead of Chiamaka Orji.
In the overall boat race, Moses Orugbami and Nwankwo Raymond emerged as winners, followed by Orji Monday and Orji Chididu in second place, and Sampson S. Chima with Aliyu Yakubu in third.
The Laser category was led by Abdulsalam Jamilu, with Amaefulam Dozie and Sub Lt. Anum Precious in second and third places respectively.
In the Kayak events, Alaba Joseph triumphed over Jason Japhet and Kazeem Ibrahim in the boys’ category, while Pataka Esther led the women’s category ahead of Deborah Ogouoko and Odoh Sandra. Aliyu Yakubu won the men’s event, followed by Amaefulam Dozie and Orji.
In the open water swimming for boys aged 10-16, Alaba Joseph, Jason Japhet, and Amaefuleh Blessed came out on top, while Benedicta Japhet led the girls’ category, followed by Nwankwo Jessica and Nwankwo Jacinta.
Sponsors of the event, including Commodore Mutairu Braimah, Captain Festus Adewuyi, and Engr. Francis Olo, emphasized their commitment to sustaining the club’s sailing culture.
Commodore Braimah, who also the Commander of NNS Wey, highlighted the importance of member participation in organizing such events.
Captain Festus Adewuyi, chairman of the interim management committee of the Navy Sailing Club, announced that the BAO Boat Race would become an annual event.
