In a strategic effort to address the skilled manpower deficit in Nigeria, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has introduced the Skill Up Artisans (SUPA) programme. The initiative is designed to tackle vocational training challenges, enhance professionalism, and provide trainees with internationally recognized certifications.
During the inaugural meeting on the implementation of SUPA for executives of enlisted skills training centers (STCs) in Abuja on Monday, ITF Director General and Chief Executive, Afiz Ogun, outlined the programme’s goals. Ogun emphasized that SUPA aims to eliminate quackery in vocational training by ensuring that all skills training lead to reputable international certifications, which in turn guarantee measurable improvements in the livelihoods of graduates.
“The era of training just for the sake of it, or the issuance of Certificates of Attendance/Competence is over,” Ogun declared. “Every skills training undertaken by ITF must culminate in internationally recognized certification, ensuring our graduates are equipped for improved livelihoods.”
Ogun highlighted that, over the past seven months, his team has diligently prepared for the SUPA program to address the technical manpower crisis in Nigeria and elevate vocational training standards. He also announced that the ITF will finance the training and enforce rigorous facility and process inspections to maintain high standards. This initiative is expected to foster a mutually beneficial partnership between ITF and Enlisted Skills Training Centers (ESTCs), driving these centers towards international recognition and enhancing the employability prospects of graduates both locally and globally.
Deputy Director of the Technical and Vocational Skills Training Department, Engr. Usman Ibrahim Gano, further elaborated on the program’s objectives. Gano emphasized that SUPA also aims to promote the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through improved service delivery, training, certification, and licensing of artisans. He assured attendees that the program would open new avenues for youth and women empowerment through targeted skills training initiatives.
“Over the years, in pursuit of its statutory responsibilities, the ITF has expanded its structures, developed training programs, and reviewed its strategies, operations, and services to meet the evolving demands for skilled manpower in the Nigerian economy,” Gano stated. “Certainly, this program will create more opportunities for youth and women empowerment through skills training initiatives.”
By integrating rigorous training standards and international certification, the SUPA program aims to transform vocational training in Nigeria, ensuring that artisans are well-equipped to meet the demands of the modern economy. This initiative not only addresses the current skilled manpower deficit but also paves the way for sustainable economic development and empowerment of Nigeria’s workforce.
