Education experts, policy makers and managers in Borno have canvassed for more fund for education to address the current gaps in the sector in the northeast states.

The stakeholders spoke at an event organized in Maiduguri, Borno State capital to mark the 2024 International Day of Education.

Borno former Commissioner of Education and teacher, Alh Inuwa Kubo, in his remark, called for community partnership and reorientation of teachers as well as parents.

“Teachers must be passionate about impacting knowledge, parents must cooperate with schools and avoid looking for shortcut,” he said.

A UNICEF Education Officer, Tina Charles called on states and federal government to increase finance to education.

“There is no way our education can be improved with the current budget. Since 2015, budget for education has continued to decrease. We must increase our education financing,” she said.

UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Phuong Nguyen said less than 40 percent of teachers in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states have minimum teaching qualification.

She said addressing the problem of education in the area requires innovative solutions. She urged people to see education as tool for peace.

“Education is a platform for the delivery of inclusive learning and psychosocial support for children in armed conflict situations,” she disclosed.

The UNICEF chief explained the 2024 international day of education is celebrated with the theme Learning for Lasting Peace. She noted that collective efforts will improve the quality of learning outcome especially for basic education in the area.

The event attended by many public schools in the capital also witnessed an automated quiz competitions among participating schools.
