The PDP Osun East senatorial candidate, Francis Fadahunsi, has clashed with army officers on patrol in Ilase town.
He accused them of blocking the gate leading to the polling unit at his Ward, 4, Unit 1, NUD Primary School, with their patrol van.
Fadahunsi urged them to vacate the place, saying that their presence was capable of scaring away voters.
He argued that military officers were not supposed to operate too close to polling units because they were armed.
He added that it was only the police that should be seen around the units, but not soldiers.
The officers, however, argued that they were on patrol and needed to be on ground to monitor the election activities.
They added that they did not embarrass anybody while carrying out their duties.
As soon as they left the gate, voters who were waiting with apprehension, trooped to the polling unit to cast their votes.
Fadahunsi, however, described the process as very peaceful.
He commended INEC for proper preparation, following prompt arrival of materials and proper functioning of the card readers.
Fadahunsi expressed optimism on emerging, victorious in the poll.
My victory is as sure as death,” he said.
Meanwhile, voting commenced promptly at 8:00 am in Osun according to schedule with impressive turnout of voters.
At Unit 3, Ward 1, Ibokun in Obokun Local Government Area, the Presiding Officer, Njemanze Williams, said the process was smooth.
He added that the card readers functioned properly.
A 70-year old woman, Mrs Sajuyipe Sodinat, said she, among other elderly women of her age, came to the polling unit around 6.00 am to cast their votes.
She added that the situation in Nigeria required commitment to voting for candidates of choice.
