Oba of Benin Omo N’Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, on Tuesday observed the 2024 Ugierhoba traditional rites, steeped in enduring Benin history for centuries.

Ugierhoba, which is the sacred altars, dedicated to Oba Ewuare’s forebears, featured special prayer by the Oba, who was decked in traditional and royal accoutrements along with Benin Chiefs, donned in unique ceremonial costumes.

The first class traditional ruler, geared up for an unforgettable moment during the spiritual retreat where he dance to Ogbelaka Royal drum beats, marking the end of a glorious year.

Chiefs drawn from the various Guilds also twirled the ceremonial swords (Eben), a symbol of authority.

They also exhibited their dancing skills as well as measure of dexterity in their various performances at the event, which was attended by residents of Edo State and members of the Benin Royal family.

Earlier, Oba Ewuare II, interceded on behalf of Benin people to Almighty God and his ancestors and offered prayers at his ancestral altars, nestled in the heart of nature, mix of cheers and gasps by onlookers.

The event climaxed with special dance by the Oba, who presented the items for the traditional rites to his ancestors and made a symbolic slaughtering of the animals supported by Ehondor (traditional butchers) at the event.

Eclectic Emehe and Osikhian Guilds, spiced up the event with their melodious songs, while Ifiento Guild assisted security personnel, preventing visitors and cinematographers who scramble not to miss the sights and sounds with electronic devices, from breaking established rules that could invoke ominous maledictions upon themselves.
