Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has expressed gratitude to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) which recently announced it would confer an honorary doctorate degree on him.
Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill announced the planned conferment on Wednesday during a visit to Wike’s residence in Abuja, where he presented the official letter of conferment.
In a Facebook post early Thursday, Wike said the university has “given me everything”, promising to continue to support the institution.
He said, “I feel so honoured to have been offered Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) by University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), the university that gave me everything.
“I am a proud alumnus of the university where I first studied political science before pursuing another degree in law.
“I thank the University Governing Council led by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, for finding me worthy of this honour.
“I am happy and I accept the offer on behalf of my family, my wife and my friends and I promise to be there to celebrate the golden jubilee of the university.
“I will also continue to partner and support the university.”
Wike obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Rivers State University (RSU) in 1997.
He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies from the same institution.
In March 2025, the University of Calabar awarded him an honorary doctorate degree in Law.
