Why did you venture into catering business?
I loved baking as a child and I turned my passion into a business called Jo’Ella Cakes. My interest and dedication to children became the springboard for establishing Jo’ella Baking Academy, which was launched in 2015, to enrich children and youths and make them experience the pure joy of baking.
Also in 2015, I launched 9jaBites Cooking School as a platform to give the world opportunity to taste and experience the beautiful and rich array of culinary delights of Nigeria and Africa as a whole. ‘A Taste of Afrika’ also provides catering services for functions and events.
The icing on the cake is my new venture, A Taste of Afrika. l am so excited about promoting Africa’s rich heritage, our art, culture, fashion and music through the beauty of food. In my own personal journey, l have been inspired and motivated by many virtuous women. Networking has brought me out of my comfort zone and propelled me to bring together women from different communities for the very first “A Taste of Afrika Women Network.” The Taste of Afrika provides catering services for functions and events. For me, being an ambassador for African entrepreneurship in the United Kingdom has been exciting experience in my entrepreneurial journey as well as mentoring others.
What is the essence of A Taste of Afrika Women’s Network?
A Taste of Afrika Women’s Network was conceived to help communities, as well as empower and inspire women. Our network is a space where you can connect with like-minded women, share your experiences and support one another in achieving your goals. Whether you’re here to advance your career, build your business or simply connect with other women who share your interests, we are here to support you. We believe that together, we can achieve great things. As members of this network, we encourage you to engage in discussions, attend our events and contribute your unique perspectives to help us grow and learn from one another. We look forward to getting to know you and supporting you on your journey.
Why did it metamorphose into business?
Our journey began with a simple goal to celebrate and showcase the rich diversity of African culture, food, art and craftsmanship. Africa is a continent with vibrant traditions, endless creativity and stories waiting to be shared, and this market serves as a platform to bring those stories to life.
When I started A Taste of Afrika, I was driven by a passion for community and connection. I wanted to create a space where small businesses and artisans from the African diaspora could thrive; where people from all walks of life could experience the beauty and warmth of African heritage. Every dish, every handmade product and every piece of art here carries the essence of Africa’s diverse cultures and traditions.
Our pop-up market is more than just a place to shop; it’s a celebration of identity, creativity and unity. By supporting this market, you’re not just purchasing products—you’re supporting dreams, preserving traditions and helping to create a future where African culture is celebrated globally.
Together, we can continue to uplift and share the beauty of Africa with the world.
Recall the experience of your early years in the UK. Did you experience culture shock?
Moving to the United Kingdom was both exciting and challenging. The cultural differences were evident, from lifestyle and social interactions to food and traditions. Adapting to a new environment, different accents, and a fast-paced way of life took time, but it also broadened my perspective and shaped me into the person I am today.
What are the challenges and triumphs of being an entrepreneur abroad?
Being an entrepreneur abroad came with its share of challenges—navigating a different business landscape, building networks from scratch and gaining trust in a competitive market. There were moments of doubt but through persistence, learning and a strong support system, I overcame hurdles. Faith, discipline and adaptability were key to pushing through and building my brand successfully.
What lessons have you learnt about life?
Success requires resilience. Nothing comes easy; perseverance is essential. People matter. Meaningful relationships and connections open doors. Self-belief is everything. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. Faith and action go hand in hand. Trusting God is crucial, but you must also take action.
You just clocked 60 years, how do you feel about it and what were your memorable moments growing up?
Reaching 60 years feels like an incredible blessing! It’s a time of gratitude, wisdom and embracing the journey. Looking back, some of my fondest memories include childhood adventures, family traditions and personal milestones that have shaped my life.
Growing up, family bond was everything. Praying together and sharing meals at the dining table were cherished daily traditions, filled with laughter, conversations and precious moments. Having supportive parents who shaped our lives was truly a blessing.
My dad was a great motivator, always believing in my sister and I, encouraging us to excel in our chosen careers with his words: “Be the best at what you do.” Both my parents inspired me deeply, instilling values of greatness, resilience and faith that continue to guide my journey today.
The most precious milestone in my 60-year journey is the birth of my beloved daughter, Omobola, a priceless gift from God. She is truly one in a million, filling my life with endless joy and love every single day. Words cannot fully capture how extraordinary she is, she is simply the best daughter in the universe! Every experience has contributed to the person I am today, and I cherish them all.
What vision do you have for your business in the next five years?
I envision growth, expansion and greater impact in all my ventures: A Taste of Afrika Women’s Network – expanding our reach, empowering more women, and creating opportunities for collaboration.
I look forward to the Pop-Up Markets and Events subsidiary hosting larger and more influential events that celebrate African culture and entrepreneurship. Also, the Business and Personal and Development arm will continue to focus on mentoring upcoming entrepreneurs and helping them navigate their journeys. Our Faith and Wellness Initiatives unit encourage holistic well-being in a way that combines faith, business, and a healthy lifestyle.
