Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has identified tax evasion as one of the evils that causes underdevelopment because it affects revenue.

In his remarks as the chief host at the investiture of Dr Caroline Ndubuisi as the sixth National Chairperson of Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) at the weekend, the CITN president, Mr Samuel Agbeluyi described the rate of tax evasion as alarming, saying that the the elite and the corporate bodies are the most offenders.

He called on the legislature to give the tax bill, currently before the National Assembly, a speedy consideration.

“This legislative effort is certainly commendable; however, no matter how well-designed a policy or law may be, its success ultimately depends on the quality of its implementation. As tax professionals, our contributions have never been more crucial than now. The bill, currently awaiting concurrent approval from the senate, amongst other things, recommends the introduction of tax agents who will serve as intermediaries between tax payers and revenue authorities” he said

According to Agbeluyi, people evade tax when the politicians and leaders don’t make good use of the taxes collected.

“We, therefore, appeal to the leaders to ensure that whatever that’s collected from tax payers is used for the development of Nigeria” he said.
