Olatunji W. Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, was fatally wounded while trying to pick up a passenger outside a hookah lounge in Philadelphia.
CBS News reports that Bolaji, who resided in Norristown, Pennsylvania, was killed shortly before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
He had arrived outside Byblos Hookah Bar to pick up a rider when two men emerged from a car parked behind.
The individuals opened fire on the vehicle as the 22-year-old passenger entered, according to Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small, who spoke to the news outlet.
Four shots were fired by the suspects, and Bolaji was hit in the head, while his passenger sustained injuries in the arm, leg, and stomach.
Despite being shot at, Bolaji managed to drive away from the crime scene before crashing the car.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and tried to save his life, but Bolaji was subsequently pronounced dead.
He was described as a “loving partner and father” to a son.
The unidentified passenger is in critical condition and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
