Since assuming office as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu has brought a sense of purpose, direction and renewal to the institution. His leadership, though interim, has been characterized by a clear vision and a steadfast commitment to addressing long-standing challenges while laying the groundwork for sustainable progress. In a relatively short period, his administration has made significant strides in fostering stability, enhancing academic standards, improving infrastructure and strengthening the university’s relationship with its community and the global academic landscape.
When Prof. Ikechebelu was reinstated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the 21st of November, 2024, following the dissolution of the Amb. Greg Mbadiwe led Governing Council and nullification of the appointment of Bernard Odoh as Vice Chancellor, over alleged irregularities and gross abuse of office, the university was navigating a period of administrative uncertainty. One of his immediate priorities was to restore a sense of calm and order. He adopted an inclusive approach, engaging with various stakeholders, including staff, students, and union representatives. By fostering open communication and transparency, he was able to address lingering grievances and rebuild trust and confidence within the university community. This collaborative approach not only resolved conflicts but also created a more harmonious environment where academic and administrative activities could thrive without disruption.
Recognizing the critical role of academic excellence in the university’s mission, Prof. Ikechebelu and his team, initiated a comprehensive review of critical activities towards achieving a sustainable academic and administrative structure. The goal was to ensure that UNIZIK’s programs were aligned with global best practices and equipped students with the skills and knowledge needed to compete in an increasingly interconnected world. He placed a strong emphasis on discipline, punctuality, research and innovation, encouraging both faculty and students to pursue groundbreaking studies. To support these efforts, his administration worked to secure research grants and establish international collaborations, providing the necessary resources and opportunities for academic growth. At the same time, he prioritized the renovation and upgrading of key learning facilities, including lecture halls, power and electricity and other key infrastructure, to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Infrastructure development has been another key focus of his leadership. One of the notable projects completed under his watch was the UNIZIK Bus Terminal, a facility developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Don Greg International Limited. This project has significantly improved transportation for students and staff, easing movement within and beyond the campus. The terminal’s commissioning, performed by Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, was attended by the Honorable Commissioner of Transportation, Anambra State and other dignitaries. This underscored the administration’s commitment to leveraging partnerships for the benefit of the university community.
Additionally, and very significantly, Prof. Ikechebelu took audacious steps towards addressing the persistent issue of unstable power supply, which had long disrupted academic activities. By ensuring a steady power supply, even on weekends, his administration reduced reliance on generating sets. This important milestone triggered jubilation among staff and students. This is amidst ongoing plans for a solar power field to secure a more improved and sustainable and reliable energy source for the future.
Staff welfare and professional development have also been central to his agenda. Prof. Ikechebelu inherited issues of non-payment of staff salaries and allowances which have lingered since 2020 over non-capture on the IPPIS. Worried by the plight of the affected staff, he has again, initiated high-level representations with the federal government towards resolving the impasse as soon as possible. Despite this challenge, the staff that are under the university’s scale, have been paid promptly, addressing a major concern that had previously affected morale. To further support staff, he has taken very seriously the training workshops and capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing the skills of both academic and non-academic personnel. Improvements in office spaces and equipment have also contributed to a more efficient and comfortable working environment, enabling staff to perform their duties more effectively.
For students, Prof. Ikechebelu’s administration has implemented a range of initiatives aimed at improving their overall experience. Scholarship opportunities were expanded to support indigent students and reward academic excellence, reflecting the university’s commitment to inclusivity and equity. Security on campus was reinforced through community engagement and increased patrols, creating a safer environment for learning and personal development. Additionally, access to essential student services, including healthcare, counseling, and career guidance, have received significant attention, ensuring that students received the support they needed to succeed both academically and personally.
One of the most significant milestones during his tenure was UNIZIK’s selection as the first Nigerian university to win 200, 000.00 Swiss Franc (N34, 100, 000.00) from the prestigious World Trade Organization (WTO) Chairs Programme. This highly competitive global initiative supports academic activities related to trade in developing and least-developed countries. Out of 27 Nigerian universities that applied, UNIZIK emerged successful, a testament to the institution’s growing reputation in trade policy research and capacity building.
This achievement under the watch of Prof. Ikechebelu, was celebrated by the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, who highlighted its importance in shaping Nigeria’s trade policies and economic strategies. This recognition has not only elevated UNIZIK’s profile on the global stage but also reinforced its role as a leader in international trade research and policy formulation.
Beyond academics and infrastructure, Prof. Ikechebelu has worked to strengthen the university’s relationship with its host community. In this regard, UNIZIK has reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility. Strategic partnerships with local industries have also been forged, creating more internship and employment opportunities for students and bridging the gap between academia and the workforce.
Financial prudence and accountability have been hallmarks of his administration. By streamlining financial processes, reducing waste, and increasing internally generated revenue, Prof. Ikechebelu has ensured that the university’s resources are managed efficiently. Regular audits and transparent financial reporting have restored confidence in the university’s financial management, paving the way for sustainable growth and development.
In just three months, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu has demonstrated the transformative power of visionary leadership. His ability to address long-standing challenges, implement meaningful reforms, and inspire confidence among stakeholders has set a new standard for excellence at the Ivory Tower.
While his stay has been brief, the positive impact of his leadership has been multi-sectorial and will undoubtedly have a long-lasting effect. As the university continues to build on these achievements, it is essential for all stakeholders to remain committed to the vision and values that have guided this period of renewal and progress. Through collective effort and sustained dedication, UNIZIK can continue to thrive as a beacon of academic excellence and innovation in Nigeria and beyond. The days ahead promises to be more action packed.
