The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has expressed concern over the crippling effect of high electricity costs on university operations across the country.
In a statement issued as part of the union’s New Year address, its National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, warned that the escalating energy prices are severely affecting the ability of universities to carry out essential functions, including administration, teaching, and research.
According to him, the increasing cost of electricity is not only placing a financial strain on university management but is also threatening the quality of education and services provided to students, who remain the primary stakeholders in Nigerian universities.
The union president called for urgent intervention from the federal government to address the ongoing energy crisis, noting that reliable power supply is a cornerstone of academic excellence and institutional sustainability.
Ibrahim also expressed the union’s commitment to engaging in national issues, particularly the Tax Reform Bill currently before the National Assembly. He said SSANU plans to actively participate in the legislative process to ensure that the welfare of university staff is safeguarded during the reform discussions.
The union president further reiterated a call for the federal government to fulfil its outstanding promises to SSANU, which he explained are crucial for industrial harmony and the well-being of university staff.
Additionally, Ibrahim raised alarms over the country’s prevailing insecurity, which he warned threatens national development and, by extension, the stability of the academic environment.
“As we embark on this new year, let us remain united and resolute in our mission to achieve fairness, equity, and justice for all members. The journey ahead may be challenging, but with collective strength and solidarity, we can overcome obstacles and achieve greater milestones,” he urged.
