Names most often attract fortune and luck to the name bearer. History is replete with names that had attracted in one way or the other goodluck, favour and fortune to the bearer. The late business mogul and politician MKO Abiola explained his name as M for Money, K for kudi ( Hausa name for money ) and O for Owo (Yoruba name for money ) of course with dint of hard work , fortune smiled at him and he was named the richest man in Africa. The same with the recently elected governor of Ondo State, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa who won the November 16, 2024 governorship election attributed his electoral success to the magic in his name. Maybe this ancient belief in the good spirits behind names was what propelled the ad-hoc committee that screened the acting chief of Army staff General Olufemi Oluyede and eventually conferred him with glowing attributes . By the way, ‘Oluyede’ means the king has arrived. So, does it mean that the man the committee screened for the office of the Chief of Army staff, was all along being awaited for this auspicious moment in the history of the country. No wonder fate and luck has continued to guide every of his professional steps to the extent that he had never faced any disciplinary action either for official misconduct or acts of indiscipline throughout his professional career. Hear what the committee said about him after screening. “That recommendation says that the ad-hoc committee carefully and thoroughly engaged with the nominee for the position of the Chief of Army Staff and was satisfied with his academic and professional qualifications, exposure, character, conduct, experience and general performance.
The ad-hoc committee also observed that the nominee displayed wide and in-depth knowledge of strategies and tactics during his acting capacity. The committee hereby recommends that General Olatumbosun be confirmed as Chief of Army Staff”. Hurray ! Can this be the expected messiah the country is waiting for.? The messiah , who would sweep off terrorists, bandits and other hardened criminals. The messiah who would eventually wipe away tears from widows and also stop any other killings by terrorists around the country. I recall when the National Assembly ad-hoc committee was screening him for confirmation as the twenty fourth Chief of Army staff, l was pondering in my heart if he possess the qualities and attributes that it takes to salvage the country from the evil clutches of terrorists that had clouded the country with insecurity and wrecked havoc for over 15 years. Infact, the country had witnessed the entry and exit of many Chiefs of Army staff like Abdulrahman Dambazau, Azubuike ihejirika, Ibrahim Attahiru, Tukur Yusuf Buratai and Taoreed Lagbaja since the incursion of terrorists into the country. Indeed, no one had accurately computed the damages in terms of loss of human lives and collosal damages to properties already inflicted on the country. Presently, the country is viewed as a laughing stock in the community of nations because it boast of parading one of the best military in Africa, yet it could not conquer terrorists and exit them from the country. The country is seen as very unserious as they wonder why terrorists had not been eradicated out of the country since 2008, although the committee told us that General Oluyede is very competent for the national assignment, which is to eradicate terrorist traits in the country. Although the committee told us .. According to them “We carried out this task , reviewed his CV, and asked him questions on various issues, including inter-agency synergy and civilian-military relations. He provided a commendable account of himselfOur observation, Sir, is that General Olatumboso is qualified and suitable for the position”.
Apart from his external attributes as a good strategist, he is known as a good team player which are commendable attributes of many generals”. Traditionally before a king is installed, the surrounding is swept clean with spiritual broom. Even before his confirmation as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, General Oluyede had already stamped his feet on the stained soil of the north where terrorists and other armed criminals had stained with innocent blood and General Oluyede need to be encouraged because the shoes of the COAS that he is about to put on, although a very big shoe, many believe that it will fit his feet and he needs to extra careful. because there are other of his colleagues who had dreamt of stepping into that COAS shoes and are ready to do anything to get the office. The new COAS should be advised not to allow hangers on and ethnic or religious affirmity derail his thoughts and plans when they start blowing up his trumpet and unwittingly massage his ego. Such would see him drive the high way of ego by displaying act of pomposity instead of humility in service to the nation. Humility eventually exalts a man, it is true that the army uniform added with all the intimidating ranks often swells the head of the officer by making them see themselves as Demi gods while others see themselves as larger than any man around them. The truth is that he should also be careful of the “Banana peels” syndrome . A situation whereby disgruntled colleagues and influential politicians create obstacles that would affect his efficiency and productivity.
However, all those l spoke to about the new COAS describe him as a level headed officer. These are the attributes and characteristics of a king. Indeed, those who constructed the official seat of the COAS must had conceived the traditional seat of a king in their mind. Which officer would not aspire to seat on that exalted seat as an army officer in his career time. The truth is that, being confirmed is good but Nigerians would appreciate his confirmation much better, if he starts from the day of his conferment to start giving all terrorists a sleepless night and a peaceful and happy yelutide celebration.
