Appreciation is an expression of goodwill for a gift or deserving action. It can be describe as a virtue only known to someone or people with good heart.
Indeed, good works attract commendation and respect that results into appreciation. It can be dispensed in words of letter or practical as gifts.
One of American great investor and financial expert Mr Charles Robert Schwab, said “The way to develop the best that is in a person is by appreciation and encouragement”
Last week , l watched as officers of the Armed forces (Army, Navy and the Air Force) were being decorated with their new ranks because they had gallantly served their institution and the country. Also, several officers who retired from the Force, were recognized and treated to a dinner party after serving the country meritoriously.
Same exercise had ealier happened to several police officers who were also promoted.
When institutions and the country appreciate their security personels, it sends comforting messsages to other personels.
Truely, according to an Irish-Indian educationist, Margaret Cousins, “Appreciation can make a day even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary”.
Every uniformed personel need to be sincerely appreciated because that is the ONLY profession where it’s Personels sign their death warrant because they prefer to die while protecting their fellow citizens whom they don’t know. They under go very strenuous training, and are exposed to inclement weather, just because they want to protect their fellow Nigerians not considering their ethnic or religious affiliation. These are the hallmark of members of the Armed forces. They are disciplined, diligent, faithful and easy going and become sacrificial lambs for national protection. Unfortunately, very bad water has permeated into the original clean water and polluted it. This is why we now find uniformed personels demanding for bribe and extorting money on our high-ways. Infact corruption has crept into the security institution and the bad eggs need to be flushed out immediately. Notwithstanding these noticeable flaws, the Armed forces should alway raise their shoulders high where ever they find themselves, they are the pride of Nigerians. No wonder United Nations sort for them anytime there is need for peacekeeping assignments around the world. This writer was in Atlanta-Georgia when he observed that uniformed military personel who had stepped into the bus conveying us, witnessed a memorable incident where passengers stood up and happily offered his seat for the uniformed personel while other passengers started clapping their hands in appreciation of his service to the nation. They expressed appreciation because he is their sacrificial lamb. They all know that they were protected with his presence in the bus. More impressive was when a white mother urged his little son to go and shake the soldier. It was indeed, a memorable experience. Not so in Nigeria where security personels are not accorded their required respect. Some snub them and do not see why encomium should be showered on them.
No wonder, Charles Schwan American financial expert said, “The way to develop the best that is in a person is by appreciation and encouragement”.
As l reminiscence my experience in Bama, an agricultural community in Maiduguri, when l traveled with Nigerian military to the war zone in that axis. l was ferried into the war zone in a military armored vehicle. As the truck meander through the deserted road, the military driver told me how a bomb planted by Boko Haram members had exploded few days back killing some Nigerian soldiers. As we entered Bama local government, l saw soldiers inside trenches using leafs as roofs and sophisticated long range rifles. They waved at us as the truck moved towards the captured palace of the Emir of Bama. My experience that night in the empty palace, was very horrifying and traumatic. There was cannon being fired into the enemies camp and the sound vibrated shaking the entire foundation of the captured palace. l could not find sleep around my eyes. My thought shifted to imagining if this was how l would die because lam a war journalist? l thought of my family and l blamed myself for accepting to follow General Tukur Brutai who had extended an invitation to me to observe soldiers activities under operation Lafia dole being commanded by Gen Lucky Irabor. As l laid down, sleep vanished from my eyes. It was only the vibrating sound of exploding bombs and flying bullets that was heard piercing the dark sky showing frightening pigments of lights traveling above us, as l watch through the roofless palace. As the clock tickles, l prayed that the darkness of the night be miracleously changed into daylight. My heart beat increases each time bombs explode. Fear continuously gripped my entire being as l wondered, if this is how l have chosen to die. l was not trained nor equipped like the soldiers who have signed up their life for the protection of the nation. Yet, they are not being appreciated. Truely, communities in the country should choose a day to celebrate and appreciate war soldiers from their community.
According to Ralph Marston, an American Inspirational Author, said “In order to attract more of the blessings that life has to offer, you must truly appreciate what you already have. So as we step into the new year, Security File joins Nigerians to appreciate the gallant efforts of our security personels. According to Bishop David Oyedepo said, “If you can think, then, you can thank.
