The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that the 3rd Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, an annual event honouring the impactful legacy of the late journalist and former Lagos State Governor, will hold on July 23, 2025.

This year’s lecture, themed “Journalism and the Challenge of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society,” promises a robust discussion on the vital role of the media in fostering national cohesion.

The event will take place at the Edmark D’Podium International Event Center in Ikeja, Lagos.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, CON, is slated to deliver the keynote address. He will be joined by a distinguished lineup of dignitaries, with Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, serving as chairman. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will be the Special Guest of Honor, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, will attend as the Guest of Honor.

The Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture series, instituted by the NGE, aims to celebrate Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s immense contributions to journalism, public service, and good governance.

Jakande, a former President of the NGE, remains a towering figure whose legacy continues to inspire.

The lecture series, which began in 2023 with a paper delivered by NGE Fellow Chief Felix Adenaike, continued in 2024 with Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of This Day/Arise TV, speaking on “Rapidly Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies.”

“We look forward to another insightful discussion on the challenges and opportunities in nation-building through journalism,” said Eze Anaba, President of the NGE, in a press statement co-signed by General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh.

The NGE emphasised that the lecture series underscores their commitment to upholding the ideals of ethical journalism and national development that Jakande championed throughout his life.
