The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has expressed profound grief over the death of one of Nigeria’s most revered elder statesmen, Professor Jibril Aminu, who passed away at the age of 85.

In a heartfelt tribute released on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Governor Fintiri described the late Professor Aminu as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual and political landscape”, whose passing marks the end of an era in the nation’s academic and political history.

Jibril Aminu’s distinguished career spanned medicine, academia, and public service. A renowned surgeon and scholar, he rose to become Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, setting a benchmark in educational leadership. His intellect and statesmanship later earned him national appointments, including Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States. He also represented Adamawa Central in the Senate, where he served with uncommon dignity and insight.

“Nigeria has lost one of its finest minds,” Governor Fintiri stated. “Professor Jibril Aminu was a devoted public servant and a distinguished son of Adamawa. A rare breed of patriot and silent reformer, his legacy spans education, diplomacy, and governance. His life’s work is an enduring gift to our people,” the governor concluded.
