The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has paid glowing tribute to the late Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, describing him as a revered traditional ruler who dedicated his life to serving humanity and preserving Yoruba cultural heritage.
Oba Olakulehin passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
His death came amid preparations to mark the first anniversary of his coronation. The late monarch received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan land.
In a statement, Iba Adams expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s passing, noting that Nigeria had lost a priceless asset.
He described Oba Olakulehin as a “foremost traditional ruler, custodian of culture and tradition, and a respected elder statesman.”
“Though his reign was brief, it was impactful. He brought peace to Ibadan land, resolved lingering chieftaincy disputes, and curbed the menace of land-grabbers, thereby safeguarding the city from breakdowns of law and order,”Adams said.
The Yoruba generalissimo also praised the late monarch’s harmonious relationship with the Oyo State government and other traditional rulers, which he said contributed significantly to development across Ibadan land.
Recalling a courtesy visit to the Olubadan’s palace in January during the World Congress of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU), Adams noted the warm reception extended to the group and the monarch’s unwavering support for pan-Yoruba initiatives.
He extended his condolences to the family of the late monarch, the Oyo State government, and the people of Ibadan land, praying for the repose of the king’s soul and strength for all who mourn him.
