The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has warned that the recent hike in fuel prices could lead to social unrest, as the rising cost of living pushes millions of Nigerians deeper into poverty.
The union expressed grave concern over the impact on the working class, particularly amid high inflation, economic instability, and the 250 per cent increase in electricity tariffs.
In a statement signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, the union criticized the government for implementing these changes without consulting key stakeholders.
“This sudden hike, implemented without consultation with critical stakeholders, represents a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class, who bear the brunt of such decisions,” Osifo noted.
With inflation at record highs and the cost of living soaring, Osifo expressed concern that these economic pressures could result in widespread unrest.
“Why does it have to be the common Nigerians bearing all the pains of the high cost of living, while those in power enjoy increased allocations and affluence”, he queried.
He lamented that the government has not made any concerted efforts to reduce the cost of governance or personal expenses, nor have they focused on policies to strengthen the naira and improve the standard of living for the citizens.
The TUC demanded that the government immediately rescind these decisions, implement policies that will strengthen the naira, and take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
“The Congress has long posited several strategies to improve the strength of the naira and give value to every kobo spent by Nigerians, as this is one of the root causes of the economic woes we face as a country today. Yet, much hasn’t been done about these recommendations,” he stated.
Osifo also pointed out the absence of meaningful social security measures to cushion the effects of the price hikes, accusing the government of failing to address the challenges confronting the majority of Nigerians.
He reiterated the TUC’s commitment to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and advocating for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and decent working conditions.
