The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi has said the police would revisit the case of a motorist allegedly extorted to the tune of N200,000 by some policemen in Ogun State for driving an unregistered car.
Adejobi said this in an X post on Tuesday after the victim took to the platform to raise an alarm.
In a post via his X handle @HookahsmokerN, the victim said some policemen accosted him on the road, took him to their station and extorted him of N200,000 for driving an unregistered Lexus 350 car.
He said the incident occurred on Thursday, January 23.
“They jammed me on the road last week Thursday, They took my car with them, a Lexus 350 that I just got on December 31st asking me why I had not registered it.
“They collected (a) whooping 200k. They didn’t even take me to their boss’s office. They did the extortion inside the station without their boss’s knowing. I have evidence,” the victim said.
The X user also shared a transaction notification of N205,000.
Reacting, Adejobi stated that driving an unregistered car is an offence but condemned the alleged extortion.
He said the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State would take up the case for investigation.
Adejobi noted that having been taken to the station, the motorist should have insisted on meeting the erring policemen’s commander rather than part with his hard-earned money.
“You were in the station and paid 200k without seeing the commander?? With all our warnings? This was not even on the road. This idea of not exploiting all means to curb this menace of extortion is not encouraging. You could have met with the commander before any further discussion,” the force spokesman said.
“However, let me hint you again that driving an unregistered car on any of our roads or highways is an offense.
“They have done good for contravening (sic) your car, but not too good to have extorted you. It’s unpolice. They could have taken you to court and move on. We will revisit the case. You will need to talk to the PPRO Ogun @OgunPoliceNG she will take it up.
“Let’s always do the right thing and kick against illegality,” he added.
