A non governmental organization, The WellBeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) in conjunction with Reckitt has set the target to educate, empower and inspire 6 million school children to practice healthy hygiene habits.

Hence, it kick started the Dettol Hygiene Quest (DHQ) Ambassador program in ensuring sustenability in knowledge, attitudes and practices of hand hygiene amongst students in schools across Nigeria.

Speaking at the induction event to unveil the program in Lagos, WBFA’s Director of Programming, Mr. Williams Awotunde remarked that the project is the beginning of a new chapter in immersing the students into hygiene education that will boost their well being in life.

He said. “Today isn’t just another day. It’s a pivotal moment where we come together to ignite a spark of leadership, responsibility, and transformation”

The foundation has underscored the significance of bringing together young leaders from across Lagos, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory to promote hygiene and healthy living with the Dettol Hygiene quest initiative in partnership with Reckitt is aimed at instilling sustainable hygiene practices in Nigerian schools.

Awotunde asserted that the goal is not just to hold a single workshop, but to drive “lasting behavioural change that doesn’t end with a campaign.”

To this end, Hygiene Quest Clubs will be established in participating schools, where DHQ ambassadors will take on leadership roles as they uphold values commitment, teamwork, and leadership.

Similarly, membership in the Hygiene Quest Club is open to all students interested in promoting health and cleanliness in their schools and communities as they are to hold weekly meetings, participating in weekly club activities, and serving as hygiene role models to monitor hygiene standards.

“The clubs will ensure that hygiene education and advocacy continue long after the banners are taken down

“You will lead handwashing demonstrations, hygiene campaigns, and WASH activities, keeping the momentum alive in your schools,” said Awotunde.

The WBFA director of programmes extolled the young participants for stepping into roles as leaders and changemakers, adding that their efforts could have a ripple effect across their communities.

“You’re not just participants, you are leaders, innovators, and changemakers. “Together, we’re nurturing a culture of hygiene and health that will ripple outwards, touching lives and safeguarding futures he said.

On his part, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Hakeem Shiittu ably represented by Mr Avoseh Stephen affirmed that the objectives of this workshop is to build the capacity of students and teachers to promote good hygiene practices and empower the ambassadors as role models for healthier school environments
He stressed the need to strengthen collaboration among education stakeholders for sustained impact to improve public health.
