On International Menstrual Hygiene Day, First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, issued a powerful message urging Nigerians to prioritise the health and dignity of girls and women.
In her statement, titled “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” the First Lady stressed the collective responsibility to educate young girls about menstruation and provide them with essential support.
“We are reminded of our duty of care to our daughters, sisters, and every girl around us,” Tinubu said. “This year’s theme reminds us of our responsibility to educate our girls about menstruation from an early age and provide support to help them during their menstrual cycle.”
She highlighted the importance of access to clean water, sanitary pads, and proper hygiene, stressing that menstruation should never hinder a girl’s education or opportunities. “Menstruation must not limit a girl’s access to education, health, and equal opportunities. Let us ensure that our girls have access to clean water, sanitary pads, and proper hygiene practices to ensure that they do not miss school days,” she stated.
The First Lady also called for urgent action to address period poverty and stigma. “We can do more to eliminate period poverty and stigma to enable every girl to live with dignity,” she affirmed.
She concluded by wishing Nigerians a “Happy International Menstrual Hygiene Day,” reaffirming her commitment to the well-being and empowerment of girls across the country.
