First City Polytechnic, a private institution in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has matriculated its inaugural set of students for the 2024/2025 academic year.

During the ceremony, Acting Rector Dr Owoeye Micheal urged the matriculants to adhere to the institution’s rules and avoid vices such as cultism, sexual misconduct, and drug abuse.

Dr Owoeye noted that the students were selected on merit, meeting the admission requirements. He described their matriculation as the start of an academic journey filled with challenges and opportunities, saying, “Expectedly, this journey will be filled with challenges, triumphs, and countless opportunities for growth and development.” He assured them of opportunities to develop life skills aligned with the polytechnic’s vision to become a world-class institution fostering knowledge, skills, and moral values.

Furthermore, he highlighted the institution’s commitment to a stable academic calendar and entrepreneurial education, stating, “First City Polytechnic does not only maintain a stable academic calendar but also strives to implement ideal educational practices within a serene environment, in addition to promoting self-reliance among graduates with a focus on entrepreneurial-backed education.” He also emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for social vices, noting, “Any student found in violation of the principles will face appropriate sanctions. It is imperative for every student to acquaint themselves with the polytechnic’s rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook and adhere diligently to them. Your cooperation in upholding the values of our academic community is vital for a positive and respectful learning environment.”

Dr Owoeye acknowledged the challenges of starting a new institution, saying, “As it is with new institutions, it has not been easy taking off; this is our first matriculation, and we are praying that the polytechnic will grow steadily and progressively.” He added that the polytechnic’s entrepreneurship programme is designed to ensure graduates are self-reliant.

The ceremony, attended by parents, concluded with the new students taking an oath of studentship.
