From Idu Jude, Abuja
The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Monday, June 30, 2025, officially inaugurated an 11-member board of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Abuja.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, noted that the event marks a critical step in strengthening the governance structures of Nigeria’s maritime institutions and positioning the sector for greater national impact.
The Minister said the inauguration of the board aligns seamlessly with the broader vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition key institutions of government for optimal performance.
Oyetola said, “By the provisions of the NPA Act, this exercise underscores the administration’s firm commitment to institutional reforms aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, improving transparency, and unlocking the immense potential of our marine and blue economy for inclusive, sustainable economic growth.
“Under Section 2 of the NPA Act, the Governing Board is vested with key policy responsibilities, particularly in the areas of staff matters (Section 10(3)(b)) and the formulation and approval of budgetary estimates (Section 20). These responsibilities are executed primarily through the board’s two strategic committees, the Staff and Establishment Committee and the Finance Committee, each playing a vital role in ensuring that the Authority functions efficiently and in alignment with national goals.
“Importantly, the day-to-day operations and execution of policy decisions remain solely the responsibility of the Managing Director and the Management Team. This is stipulated in Section 10(3) of the NPA Act and further reinforced by the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, 2007. Clear boundaries between governance and management must be maintained for operational integrity and efficiency.
“I also draw your attention to Section 170201(A) of the Public Service Rules, which clearly outlines the limits of board oversight. The board is to provide policy direction and supervision in line with government directives but must not interfere with routine management or operational execution.
“To the Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority, I enjoin you to engage constructively with the board in a manner that reflects professionalism, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. Institutional harmony is vital, and this can only be achieved through cooperation, transparency, and unwavering dedication to national service.
“To the newly inaugurated board members, I congratulate you. I urge you to approach this assignment with discipline, focus, and a firm commitment to national interest. Your role is pivotal to the development of a competitive and efficient port system—one that meets global standards and contributes meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic transformation.”
Meanwhile, Oyetola commended the Chairman of the NPA Governing Board, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, for his steadfast leadership and demonstrated commitment to national development.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Michael Oloruntola, in a welcome address, remarked that the inauguration is an important milestone in the efforts to consolidate the NPA in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said, “Your calibre is assuring and inspires confidence. As you will hear from the Honourable Minister, your duty is noble and compelling. The NPA, under your charge, must attain greater heights and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector and the economy at large.”
Senator Adedayo Adeyeye promised a harmonious working relationship with the well-selected members of the board, while emphasising the need to align with the administration’s policy.
Adeyeye said, “What is important is for one to be worthy of the appointment, and among us are eminently qualified personalities who have distinguished themselves in various capacities. I know they will live up to expectations, and another thing is for us to key into Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. We are also expected to bring in our various experiences to make a mark. This is because our tenure must be of great success.”
Adeyeye, however, warned the board members to be prudent in their dealings, as such actions might subject the board to an anti-graft investigation.
“I expect that we behave like a family and always subject ourselves to the Minister as the head. The beginning is not what matters, but finishing well. Please do not go to prison and try to protect your reputation,” he concluded.
Other members of the board include Dr Mercy Lori, Hon. Aminudin Turkur Idris, Ekoedide Ebi-Erin Daniel, Sen. Lawan Jalo Zarami, Hon. Olabanji Olayemi Olabanji, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho (Managing Director, NPA), Ibrahim Abbas Umar, Olalekan Badmus, and Vivian Edet.
The board is expected to meet at least four times within the constitutional provision before the tenure is over.
