From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
The federal government has directed Hitech, a renowned construction company, to intervene in the Calabar-Itu Highway project to alleviate the suffering of motorists.
Engr. Olayinka Onafuye, Federal Controller for Works in Cross River State, disclosed this in an interview in Calabar.
“The ministry is aware of the plight of the people, and the Works Minister has directed that this section be done to alleviate their suffering,” Engr. Onafuye said.
According to him, Hitech’s intervention will cover 11.9 km, starting from the Odukpani junction. He noted that the previous contractor, Julius Berger, had completed 3 km of the section, and Hitech will focus on the remaining portion.
Giving more details of the project, Engr. Onafuye explained, “They will undertake stone base work where necessary, followed by binder and asphalt pavement. Subsequently, they will commence reconstruction from the base to the concrete section.”
He appealed for patience from motorists during the construction period, assuring that the outcome would be worth the temporary inconvenience.
The Works Minister’s directive aims to further address the plight of motorists who have faced significant challenges on the road which connects Calabar, Cross River State to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Governor Senator Bassey Otu had earlier initiated the reconstruction of the Adiabo-Ikoneto road.
The road project which had been abandoned for over 20 years now provides an alternate route for motorists plying the Calabar Itu Highway.
