Farmer shoots 2 dead in Ogun, threatens to kill 8 more

The ancient town of Iwoye-Yewa in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State was thrown into mourning following the alleged killing of two prominent members of the community by a middle-aged farmer, identified as Oladosu Nureni. 

The incident was reported to have occurred last week Wednesday in the agrarian town.

Our correspondent learnt that the two victims, Ajayi Onifade, who was the Amuludun of Iwoye land and Olatunji Ayinla, were allegedly shot at two different locations by the suspect.

A source who is also a resident of the community told our correspondent that Nureni, whose house is a stone throw from late Onifade’s house, shot the victim at close range while mounting his motorcycle en route his farm on Wednesday morning.

He added that Ayinla, was, however, shot by Nureni during a manhunt for him and he died on the spot.

Onifade, according to the source, later gave up the ghost on Friday night at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, where he was taken to for treatment.

The suspect was reported to be prowling the town, threatening to kill eight more persons and anyone who attempted to apprehend him.

Speaking with our correspondent on phone on Sunday, the eldest child of Ajayi Onifade, Seyi, said the matter was immediately reported at the Ilaro Division of Nigeria Police and expressed his disappointment that the suspect was yet to be apprehended by the police.

He alleged that efforts by the community to launch a serious manhunt for the suspect, with the view of apprehending him were being thwarted by the police.

Seyi, said urgent action must be taken to arrest the suspect who has continued to instil fear into the residents of Iwoye town, by threatening to deal ruthlessly with everybody who dared to be part of a search party for him.

This action, according to Seyi, had forced many residents to flee the community.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was not aware of the incident.

Oyeyemi, who told our correspondent on phone that he was on his way to Abeokuta from Ibadan, however, promised to get in touch with the DPO in charge of Ilaro Divisional Police headquarters, to confirm the incident.

But as at the time of filing this report, the PPRO was yet to get back to our correspondent to confirm the incident. A phone call put to him by the correspondent reminding him of his promise was not taken.
