Euro 2024: Cole Palmer reveals why Southgate prefers Saka, Foden

By Seyi Babalola

Cole Palmer, a Chelsea and England midfielder, has said that he understands why he is behind players like Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden in the England squad.

Gareth Southgate did not bring Palmer off the bench in their opening two Euro 2024 matches against Serbia and Denmark.

The 22-year-old did, however, play the final 30 minutes of the 0-0 draw against Slovenia.

His cameo has increased calls for Southgate to start him in Sunday’s last-16 match against Slovakia.

But Palmer said: “Personally, I think I’m ready but it’s not up to me. I just wait for my time and when I get on I just try to do what I do.‌

“I was just excited to get on for 20 minutes and thought I was going to try to do something or make an impact.

“I wouldn’t say I’m impatient because I know it’s my first tournament and you’ve got players like Saka, Foden and Bellingham in my position so it is understandable. But I just want to get on and try to impress when I do.”
