As part of preparations for relocating to its permanent site, the Central Washington College of Nursing Sciences, Enugu, has commenced formal engagement with its host Akpuoga community, in Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The interactive session brought together school representatives and community stakeholders to discuss the planned move and establish a foundation for lasting collaboration.

Founder of the college, Prof. Augustine Akubue, explained that the forum was designed to strengthen ties with the community and ensure mutual benefits as the institution settles into its new home.

“We’re not just moving here, we’re becoming part of this community. We’re seeking collaboration in areas like security, employment, and general community development. Our mission goes beyond education; we want to uplift lives and contribute to human capital development,” he said.

Prof. Akubue noted that recent Enugu State Government policies encouraging community engagement before any major development informed the college’s proactive approach.

“Community engagement is no longer optional; it’s essential. It aligns with our core values, and we want to grow together with the people of Akpuoga,” he added.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the college announced several initiatives for the host community. These include free medical outreaches with sponsored surgeries, job opportunities for both teaching and non-teaching staff, and scholarships offering up to 40% tuition discounts to outstanding students from the area.

The college also pledged to actively participate in cultural events, promote health and education awareness, and provide regular platforms for dialogue with the community.

Currently operating a College of Nursing and Midwifery, the institution plans to launch a separate College of Health Technology offering courses in Public Health, Environmental Health, and Community Health. According to Prof. Akubue, the two colleges will operate from different locations to comply with regulatory guidelines.

“We are fully registered with JAMB, and we’re working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure we meet all standards,” he said.

The engagement was warmly received by community leaders, who pledged their support and expressed optimism about the college’s presence.

A former councillor, Williams Okolo said, “The way this project was presented is impressive. We’re proud to have such a development in our community, and we will give it all the support it needs to succeed.”

Also speaking, Collins Ekete, a former Deputy Chairman of Enugu East LGA, added, “When I heard the Professor speak, I was moved. This is a great development for our people, and I’m glad we are part of it.”

Representatives of the college assured the community that the institution remains open to continuous partnership, promising to be more than just a school, but a stakeholder in the community’s progress.
