Once again, energy tycoon and industrialist, Dr Kola Adesina, has proven that he is one of Nigeria’s most influential people today. He did that in August last year when he clocked 60 and literally shut down Lagos to celebrate the milestone. On May 16, 2025, the Chairman, Ikeja Electric Plc, lost his beloved mother, Mrs Adejumoke Awero Adesina, who died peacefully at age 84 in Lagos.

Last week, after adequate preparation, Adesina buried his mother in a two-day ceremony characterised by unparalleled grandeur and heartfelt tributes. Tributes poured in from across Nigeria’s business and civic space, with many acknowledging Mama Adesina’s influence in raising a son whose leadership continues to shape critical sectors of the Nigerian economy. There is no gainsaying that the late Adesina matriarch would definitely turn in her grave for the honour and unrivalled show of love that her beloved son attracted for her sake.

The obsequies started on Thursday, June 6 with a Service of Songs and Evening of Tributes at the Harbour Point Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. The ceremony boasted an illustrious roll call of high-profile guests, reflective of Adesina’s wide-reaching social and professional networks.

A befitting funeral service followed on Friday, June 7 at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG City of David, Trinity Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos, and it was a delight for all present. There was a special performance by Beejay Sax after which Pastor Sesan Adebowale read Mama’s biography where she was described as a woman of timeless grace and inner strength.

In a heartfelt message, the deceased’ son, Adesina described his late mother as someone who “lived a life characterized by grace, strength, and unwavering love for her family and all who knew her.” The well attended funeral service was followed by a private interment at the Ikoyi Cemetery where the remains of the deceased were committed to mother earth.
