Science and arts exhibitions among students have been described as essential to the development of a child. Sadiq Ibrahim, outgoing principal of Laureates College, Lagos, stated during a five-day science and arts exhibition in the school that exhibitions help to ensure that children are well grounded in their various chosen careers.
Speaking at an exhibition held at the school premises, Ibrahim said it was aimed at enabling the students to have cognitive development and the ability for emotional expression. He explained that the event would enhance the brilliance and intelligence of the students, which would, in turn, improve their academic performance.
“Their social skills have also been improved. When they work in groups, it also helps them to socialise, and, of course, learn more from other people. The exhibition also helps them to learn more about other people’s culture, share their own feelings, thinking, and, of course, their creativity and innovation. They will develop some kind of passion for whatever they are doing’’.
He stressed the importance of practicality in science, saying that, without practicals, teaching of science would become abstract. He advised other schools to ensure that they engaged their students in science practical projects, as they would go a long way in helping their academic performance.
Lamenting the effect of telephone and social media on young ones, he said it had eroded a lot of things from the children. He then appealed with the parents to monitor the activities of their children on the internet, as such effort would go a long way in guiding them to do the right thing.
Some of the students who took part in the exhibition expressed their gratitude to the school authority for organizing such an event, saying that it had impacted them greatly.
