…Gives them starter packs, N500,000 grants
In a significant move to empower young entrepreneurs and drive economic growth in the oil-producing communities, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has equipped 200 beneficiaries with starter packs worth millions of naira and N500,000 each as seed capital.
Additionally, 500 women from DESOPADEC’s mandate areas received N100,000 grants to support their small-scale ventures.
The event, which is the fifth edition of the empowerment initiative, was held in Effurun, Delta State at the weekend.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by the Chief of Staff to the Delta State Government, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, described the initiative as a cornerstone of his administration’s vision for youth empowerment and sustainable development.
“This programme demonstrates our unwavering commitment to equipping our youths with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
“It’s not just about providing tools or funds, it’s about laying the groundwork for economic transformation in our communities,” Oborevwori said.
Governor Oborevwori linked the programme to his MORE agenda, which focuses on human capital development, youth empowerment, and infrastructural progress.
He expressed optimism that the initiative would create a ripple effect of economic growth, lifting entire communities out of poverty.
“With these starter packs and grants, we are building a foundation for long-term economic growth. Each business that thrives will create jobs, stimulate local economies, and inspire others to follow suit,” he said.
He also highlighted the programme’s significance in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth, describing it as a vital component of Delta State’s development strategy.
DESOPADEC Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor, highlighted the rigorous selection process to ensure that only qualified and motivated individuals were chosen.
“Our beneficiaries were carefully selected through a painstaking process to ensure they meet the criteria of the programme. This is not just a handout; it is an investment in promising individuals who have demonstrated the potential to make a difference.
“The tools and funds we are providing today are gateways to economic independence and job creation. By removing financial and material barriers, we are empowering these young men and women to take charge of their futures,” he said.
Executive Director of Social Services, Chief Favour Izoukumor, stressed the importance of bridging the gap between training and implementation.
He noted that DESOPADEC’s initiative goes beyond just providing resources as it also includes monitoring and mentorship to ensure sustainability.
“Many young people have skills, but lack the means to translate those skills into thriving businesses. That’s the gap we are addressing today.
“With these starter packs and funds, our beneficiaries now have the tools, materials, and financial support to establish themselves as successful entrepreneurs,” Izoukumor said.
He warned against misuse of the resources, adding that DESOPADEC has deployed monitoring teams to provide oversight and guidance.
“These tools are not to be sold or misused. They are meant to create opportunities for growth and success. Beneficiaries must honour the trust placed in them and work hard to become agents of change in their communities,” he emphasized.
The starter packs include essential tools for various trades, such as laptops, hairdryers, ovens, chest freezers, generating sets, and other specialized equipment designed to meet the diverse needs of the beneficiaries trained in fields such as ICT, electrical installation, fashion design, catering, welding, among others.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude to DESOPADEC and the Delta State government for the life-changing opportunity.
“I have always wanted to expand my catering business, but I lacked the resources to do so. This support means everything to me,” Beatrice Sunday, a recipient, said.
Another beneficiary, Ernest Erhabor, said: “This programme has removed the barriers I faced in starting my electrical installation business. I am deeply grateful and will ensure that these resources are put to good use.”
