As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, have congratulated Nigerians on the 26th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance in the country.
In separate messages of felicitation to Nigerians and the people of Niger State, they said the 26 years of unbroken democratic governance is worth celebrating despite the current challenges in the country.
Governor Bago, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, urged Nigerians not to be demoralised by the current situation but to reflect deeply on the progress made over the past 26 years. He encouraged them to renew their commitment to nation-building and uphold the principles of democracy, regardless of the challenges.
According to him, Democracy Day symbolises the victory and collective will of the people over dictatorship. It also serves as a reminder of the struggles, sacrifices, aspirations, and resilience of past heroes and heroines who fought for democracy.
Similarly, in a statement by the Acting Director, Directorate of Information, Mairo Adamu Mani, Speaker Sarkindaji described Democracy Day as a remarkable achievement in the life of Nigeria and Nigerians after years of military rule. He acknowledged that, despite the enthronement of democratic governance since 1999, the nation is still not where it should be, and leaders at all levels of government need to do more for Nigerians.
While urging Nigerians to remain prayerful in the face of numerous challenges bedevilling the country, he also charged leaders to uphold the principles of democracy, which are built on equity, justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
Sarkindaji noted that, based on available indices, the country is not doing badly. He stressed that the current administration remains committed to repositioning the country through the Renewed Hope Agenda but emphasised that citizens must support the government to achieve the desired results.
“I urge you all to continue to pray for leaders at all levels for purposeful leadership. Good governance requires the support of the citizens,” he said.
In Niger State, the Speaker maintained that the 10th Assembly remains committed to fostering a cordial working relationship with the Executive Arm of Government to achieve desired results and provide the dividends of democracy to the people. He believes this partnership will enable the government to realise its vision of a New Niger and its Agricultural Revolution initiatives, aimed at driving growth, prosperity, and progress in the state.
