A Deputy Comptroller in charge of Finance, Administration and Technical Services in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Essien Andrew, yesterday, collapsed before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts.
Andrew, who was briefing the committee on the remittances of levies to designated federal government’s accounts, suddenly paused midway into his presentation and said: “Sir, I need to take water.” The committee chairman, Bamidele Salam, responded: “You need to take water sir? Yes, go ahead. Or if you need tea, do you need tea?”
The Customs officer repeated: “I may need to take water,” and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the National Assembly Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
The House, in a statement by the Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi Jnr, expressed sadness over the incident.
“Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he, unfortunately, passed away.”
The House spokesman noted that, “out of respect for the family, the official’s name will not be disclosed at this time. The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.
We recognise the significant contributions he made to the Nigeria Customs Service and to our nation.
Reacting to the incident, the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, in a statement signed by the national Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, said, “The loss of such a dedicated and valued team member is deeply felt across the Service. We are committed to supporting and assisting his family and colleagues as they navigate this difficult period. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His exemplary service and unwavering commitment to duty will be remembered and cherished by the entire NCS community. The Nigeria Customs Service will forever remember Deputy Comptroller Essien for his outstanding contributions, his exemplary service, and his dedication to the nation.”
Late Essien hailed from Nsit-Ubium in Akwa Ibom State. He was born on November 16, 1967 and joined the NCS on November 27, 1989. Till his demise, he was in charge of Revenue in the Account Unit of the Service.
