The Lagos State Ministry of Health through the state Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, will be honoured with an award by the Global Infectious Disease Initiative, Columbus, Georgia, USA, for the outstanding manner it handled the COVID-19 pandemic.
The award ceremony is part of activities lined up for the organization’s Third Annual Infectious Disease Initiative Lecture with the theme: COVID-19 Pandemic and Emerging Infectious Diseases. The event is slated for Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Marcellina’s Place, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement by Folarin Olubowale, MD, FACP, the award is an accumulation of many years of efforts to promote the specialty of infectious diseases and make healthcare providers and patients aware of common and emerging diseases.
The initiative, according to Olubowale, includes but not limited to: education on preventative measures, epidemiology, diagnoses, and treatments in the hope of being able to control infectious diseases worldwide.
Olubowale, a Nigerian based in Columbus, Georgia, United States, and board-certified internal medicine doctor and infectious disease specialist, said speakers from Nigeria and the United States of America will grace the occasion.
He said: “This year’s event will focus on the COVID-19 pandemic and the lessons we learned from it. There will be speakers from Lagos, Nigeria, who will be led by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi.
The lecturers will include Professor Sade Ogunsola, Dr. Iorhen Akase, Dr. Oluwakemi Odukoya, and, by zoom, from the United States of America, Dr. Mobolaji Ogunsakin. The discussion will focus on the COVID-19 pandemic that brought the world to a standstill and emerging infectious diseases.
