The Congress of University of Academics (CONUA) and the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) have called for collaboration with the newly elected President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Chris Piwuna, to better the university system.
In separate messages to the new ASUU president, CONUA President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu and NAMDA President, Dr. Nosa Orhue and the acting Secretary General, Dr. Shehu Abdulrahaman, congratulated him for emerging as the new president and extended their hand of fellowship to him.
Sunmonu said the moment marks a new chapter in the leadership of Nigerian academic unions, and acknowledged the significance of democratic transition and continuity in advocacy.
He stated: “As a fellow union in the Nigerian University System (NUS), CONUA believes in principled engagement, constructive dialogue, and the pursuit of academic excellence in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
“While our philosophies and approaches to unionism differ, we recognise the importance of respectful co-existence, civility in discourse, and commitment to the welfare of university staff and the advancement of education in Nigeria.
“We wish Prof. Piwuna and his team a tenure marked by wisdom, fairness, and impactful contribution to the university system. At CONUA, we remain steadfast in our vision of a progressive, inclusive, and disruption-free academic environment.”
In its message, NAMDA president congratulated Prof. Chris Piwuna on his election as president of ASUU and described his victory as an achievement and testament to his commitment as well as dedication to the advancement of academics in the NUS.
“As you lead ASUU, NAMDA looks forward to a collaborative partnership, working together towards a brighter future for academics. Your experience and commitment inspire confidence that you will contribute to championing the welfare of academics, including medical and dental academics, in an inclusive environment, the union noted.
NAMDA prayed for celestial guidance and wisdom on his new responsibility and wished him and his team a resounding success.
