Construction work has commenced on the 6-kilometre road linking Omor and Umuerum agrarian communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The road which passes through a stretch of vast farmlands where part of the popular Anambra rice is being cultivated, according to the representative of Oyi/Ayamelum federal constituency in the National Assembly, Mr Vincent Ofumelu, is being tarred for the first time in history.
Ofumelu, a lawyer, lamented that before he attracted the road project, his constituents in that area passed through untold hardship and had difficulty in conveying their agricultural produce to the cities.
The lawmaker spoke about the road project while fielding questions from newsmen during the funeral rites of his father, Chief Okafor Ofumelu, in his Umuerum country home.
“Omor/Umuerum 6-kilometre road that was flagged off on 6th of December 2019 was done by the special grace of God. It was done because I have the mind of my people at heart. It was done because I am a grassroots person.
“It was done because I know what my people want. And having known what they wanted, I gave them my word that if I went to the National Assembly I would see to it.
“So many people did not believe that it will come to pass. Today it is a success. I thank the Almighty God that Umuerum has seen asphalt coal tar for the first time in history. The asphalting of the road started on the 28th of February this year,” he said.
The lawmaker further revealed that he has great plans for his constituents saying that “number one plan is to make sure that I represent them very well for their voices to be heard. Secondly, to attract projects that will develop the entire communities in Oyi and Ayamelum federal constituency.”
