There is uneasy calm in Plateau State over reported endorsements of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang as presidential and governorship candidates in the 2027 general elections by the APC North Central Forum.

The discontent is particularly louder in the Redemption Camp of former Governor Jonah Jang, which transmuted to ‘Time Is Now’ administration, as regards whether the governor is heading to the APC.

The North Central APC Forum reportedly endorsed the duo, who are of different political parties, as candidates for the 2027 general election, a development that has sent cold shivers down the spines of members of the PDP in the state.

Sources close to the Jang’s Redemption camp were particularly aghast that such endorsements coming at a time the North Central zonal Congress was being held could be interpreted to mean that they came from the party.

“We were there for the election and nothing was said about endorsements. The story said APC North Central Forum, please note that,” one of the sources said.

However, former member of the House of Representatives under the PDP, Bitrus Kaze, said he would not be surprised if the APC endorsed Mutfwang.

He said the signals were clear immediately after the Supreme Court decided the governorship case in favour of Mutfwang that his soul has been more with the APC.

He also wondered how and why the governor could be comfortable with the fact that not even a member of the House of Assembly is a PDP member and the fact that the House is headed by a speaker, who’s a lone member.

He said: “Since the close of post-election tribunal cases to the determination of the matter involving all elected PDP officials on the platform, including the governor, and since the Supreme Court decided the matter, it became obvious to any keen observer that Governor Mutfwang, in spirit, was more in sync with Tinubu than with the PDP and that what remained in the PDP for him was only his body. But, if already we are getting endorsement for Tinubu and Mutfwang in the PDP from the APC North Central Forum while still in the PDP, I would suspect that we will end up eventually seeing Mutwang joining Tinubu in the APC and that’s not surprising to me at all.”

Asked what would be the fate of PDP on the Plateau if that eventually happens, he replied: “It’s not the fate of PDP on the Plateau per se. I had made a lot of  noise about the fate of PDP on the Plateau and adumbrated about the fact that going to the 2023 election, PDP did not have structure. The only thing that saved PDP in the very long run was the Supreme Court. And you know the Supreme Court, they say, is always the final end of a matter, not necessarily being right or wrong. So the Supreme Court decided the matter finally. But whether the Supreme Court was right or wrong, we’ll leave that discussion for another day.”
