The people of Amaekpu Item in Bende Local Government Area of  Abia State are in desperate need of government’s attention because the bridge linking them with other communities is on the brink of collapse.

A statement signed by Hon. Kalu Nnanna, president-general, AIDU, and Hon. Chris Onyekachi Okorie, secretary-general, AIDU, stated: “Our community, one of the highest palm oil and food-producing areas in the region, is on the brink of disaster. Our livelihood relies heavily on a functional road network, but the bridge linking us to Agbaja Nkporo, in Ohafia LGA has become impassable.

“With pillars already collapsing, we fear a total collapse is imminent. This critical infrastructure is our only connection to our farmland and other essential agricultural products. We’re not just talking about convenience; we’re talking about survival.

“What’s even more heartbreaking is that this bridge was constructed by our community in 1950, showcasing our resilience and self-reliance. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, the government has not performed any palliative work on this bridge since its construction over 70 years ago.”

The community implored the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, mayor of the community, Hon. Base Uwabunkeonye, NDDC chairman and chairman South East Development Commission, among others, to intervene and save their community

Maintaining that time is running out, the community stated: “We beg you to share our plea, along with accompanying videos and pictures, to bring attention to this critical issue. Every day counts, and we can’t afford to wait.”
