Ahead of the September 14 deadline for the completion of mandatory National Identification Number (NIN)-SIM verification, subscribers across Nigeria have been urged to finalise the process to avoid service disruptions.
Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, who gave the charge, recently emphasised the importance of timely compliance and avoiding the last-minute rush.
According to him, the NIN-SIM verification exercise is a crucial step in ensuring the security and integrity of operators’ telecommunications networks.
“It helps to combat SIM card fraud, improve national security and enhance the overall efficiency of our communication systems”, he said.
Adebayo, therefore, advised those still foot-dragging over the matter to get it over with before September 14.
It is pertinent to note that while the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and efficient verification process, some subscribers, for various reasons, are yet to complete the process, thus risking having their SIM cards deactivated.
“We urge all subscribers to prioritise the completion of their NIN-SIM verification. The deadline is nearing and it is essential that everyone takes the necessary steps to avoid service disruptions”, NCC recently stated in a statement.
To complete the NIN-SIM verification process, subscribers can visit any of the designated registration centers nationwide. They will be required to provide their NIN and SIM card details. The process is relatively simple and can be completed in a short time.
ALTON on its part has repeatedly assured subscribers of its support throughout the verification process. The group provided ample information and resources to assist subscribers in understanding the requirements and completing the process successfully.
“We believe that the NIN-SIM verification exercise is a vital step towards a more secure and efficient telecommunications network. By working together, we can ensure that this process is completed successfully and that all subscribers can continue to enjoy uninterrupted services”, said Adebayo.
The NIN-SIM linkage process was introduced to curb insecurity and fraud by ensuring all SIM card users are properly identified. However, the programme has faced challenges, with many Nigerians complaining of difficulty obtaining their NINs due to delays, lack of registration points and technical issues.
In response, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has assured Nigerians that all its over 10,000 NIN enrollment centers across the country and in the diaspora are open for the mandatory exercise.
The Commission reiterated that NIN enrollment is free and urged applicants to report any instances of extortion.
The assurance was given in light of the 14th September 2024 deadline for the NIN-SIM linkage.
NIMC also informed Nigerians and legal residents that any applicant who wants to modify his or her NIN data can do so through the NIMC Self-Service portal.
“Furthermore, NIN holders and applicants can make enquiries on NIN enrolment centres, processes and procedures for NIN Data modifications via its website.
