Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a true compatriot and reliable partner in the fight for justice and equity in Nigeria.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, said the Igbo nation received the news of Clark’s death with deep sadness.
The Ijaw leader passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, in Abuja at the age of 97.
Ohanaeze praised Clark’s lifelong dedication to national unity, describing him as “a revered peace builder, an outstanding voice for regional cohesion and national unity, a strong pillar in Nigeria’s political development, a quintessential patriot, and a seasoned nationalist, deeply committed to justice and equity.”
The group highlighted Clark’s support for the South East, especially his role in co-founding the Greater Nigeria Conference in 2022, which pushed for a Nigerian president of South East extraction.
“His contributions to people-centered politics, national unity, equitable resource distribution, and democratic inclusiveness were unmatched. He stood for transparency and accountability, setting a standard for public trust,” the statement read.
“In Chief Clark, Ndigbo have lost a true friend and ally in the struggle for a Nigeria where all ethnic groups have equal access to resources and a seat at the table.”
“We shall miss the strong and fearless voice of Chief Edwin Clark! May his soul rest in perfect peace!,” the statement concluded.
