The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, commended the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Operation FASAN YAMMA troops for their exceptional performance in addressing security challenges during a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) visit to Giginya Barracks, Sokoto.
Represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Abiodun Bankole, Musa praised their professionalism and urged deeper civilian collaboration.
“I am honoured to be here today as we acknowledge the dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism with which you carry out your duties in this theatre of operation,” he said, highlighting their proactive efforts across conflict zones. Emphasising modern conflict’s evolving nature, he added, “The threats we face are dynamic. The nature of modern conflict demands a holistic approach that integrates military operations with civil engagement.”
Musa stressed that military success depends on civilian trust, central to his people-centric command philosophy. “Military success is not just measured by battlefield victories but by the support and trust of the people we protect,” he noted.
He urged troops to prioritise civilian safety, adhere to rules of engagement, and uphold human rights. “Misconduct, excessive force, or disregard for the rule of law undermines the credibility and legitimacy of our mission,” he warned.
He called for compassionate and professional conduct to shape positive public perception. “Every officer, soldier, rating, and airman must serve as an ambassador of peace and stability by treating civilians as allies and protecting their rights and dignity,” Musa said. He highlighted ongoing military support through water, healthcare, and education projects in host communities to strengthen civil-military ties.
Musa charged commanders to foster teamwork, accountability, and transparent communication to maintain the Armed Forces’ reputation. “Let the people see you and run to you—not away from you. Our greatest source of intelligence is the population we serve,” he emphasised.
Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division, noted that Musa’s philosophy underscores the need to win hearts and minds in asymmetric warfare. He revealed that the visit included a sensitisation lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics to enhance professionalism. “As protectors of the vulnerable, we must embody empathy, discipline, and justice,” Ajose said.
