Former president, Muhammadu Buhari, was unable to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which took place in Lagos on Wednesday, citing a scheduled medical check-up in the United Kingdom.
The event, hosted at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island, commemorated the founding of ECOWAS in Lagos in 1975. A symbolic reenactment of the original declaration was a highlight of the anniversary activities.
In a letter to President Bola Tinubu, Buhari conveyed his congratulations to the regional body on reaching the significant milestone. He expressed regret over his inability to be present at the historic gathering, explaining that ongoing medical assessments in the UK required his attention.
“Regrettably, as Your Excellency is aware, I am currently in the United Kingdom undergoing routine medical check-ups and therefore unable to attend this historic event,” Buhari stated.
Despite his absence, the former president praised ECOWAS for its achievements and perseverance over the past half-century, particularly in overcoming numerous regional challenges.
“I congratulate Your Excellency and other Heads of State and Government on the attainment of this Golden Jubilee by ECOWAS,” Buhari wrote.
He also honored General Yakubu Gowon, the only surviving founding father of ECOWAS, for his instrumental role in establishing the organization in 1975.
“My felicitation also goes to General Gowon, the only surviving founding father of this august body,” Buhari added.
Concluding his message, Buhari reaffirmed his respect for President Tinubu and other regional leaders, stating, “Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest regards.”
