The Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) commissioned its Green Wheels Taxi electric vehicles on Monday, May 5, to promote eco-friendly transportation and reduce carbon emissions in Benue State.

The initiative is expected to create 1,500 jobs and revolutionise mobility across Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo.

BIPC Managing Director Dr Raymond Asemakaha, speaking at the event, said, “The cars represent a significant step towards reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, decreasing air pollution, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.”

He thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia and Esse Mobility for their support, noting the project’s potential to boost GDP and reduce unemployment.

Esse Oke of Esse Mobility Group praised BIPC’s vision, stating the project introduces Africa’s first solar-powered taxi fleet, targeting 500 units. BIPC’s Head of Business Development, Theresa Abeda, highlighted the taxis’ transformative impact, urging residents to embrace a cleaner environment.

BIPC Company Secretary Josephat Ioryoosu assured stakeholders of quality services, noting the vehicles feature geofencing, CCTV, and control systems for passenger safety.

The taxis, with a 500km range per charge, align with BIPC’s April 2025 delivery of 20 electric vehicles, supported by a planned charging plant at BIPC’s Mergemax station.
