Bingham University in Karu, Nasarawa State, has formally welcomed 1,500 new students into its campus for the commencement of 2023/2024 academic year.

The school management disclosed that the 1,500 new students were selected from over 7, 000 applications received for the 2023/2024 academic year.

Faculty by Faculty breakdown of the figure indicated that Health Sciences had highest admission with 354 students; followed by Computer Science with 235 students; and Basic Medical Sciences with 200 students.

Others are Pharmaceutical Sciences 105; Clinical Sciences 85; Arts 27; Social Sciences 110; Science and Technology 31; Law 94; Education 19; Environmental Science 17; Administration 108; Architecture 58; Communication & Media Studies 57.

The oath of studentship was administered to the new students at the school’s 19th matriculation ceremony held at the university campus, on Wednesday, which was attended by the parents and friends of the new students, as well as the friends of the school.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Williams Qurix, in his speech, welcomed the students, formally, to the campus where, he said, the milestone in their academic journey has just commenced. “Expectedly, this journey will be filled with challenges, triumphs, and countless opportunities for growth and development.”

He assured the students endless opportunities that would help them develop important life skills in line with the vision of the school which is to become a world-class University in knowledge and skills, while inculcating moral and spiritual values.

He told the students that Bingham University do not only maintain stable academic calendar, but also strives to implement ideal educational practices within a serene environment, in addition to promoting self-reliance among graduates with focus on entrepreneurial-backed education.

He appealed to the students to observe the rules and regulations guiding the school so they can experience a problem-free academic programme in the school. “Bingham University is a faith-based institution. We maintain a steadfast commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against social vices including cultism, sexual misconduct, drug abuse, bullying, and similar behaviors.

“Any student found in violation of the principles will face appropriate sanctions. It is imperative for every student to acquaint themselves with the university’s rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook, and adhere diligently to them. Your cooperation in upholding the values of our academic community is vital for a positive and respectful learning environment.

“This institution has a rich history, and today, you become an integral part of its future. ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.’ Your time at Bingham will be a period of intellectual sharpening, where you will engage with diverse perspectives, learn from accomplished scholars, and, most importantly, learn from one another.

“Education is a lantern that lights the path to wisdom. As you navigate the corridors of academia, keep in mind that a tree without roots will fall. So, ground yourself in the fundamentals of your chosen field, and let your roots delve deep into the soil of learning.

“Carry with you the conviction that your education here is not just for personal gain but for the betterment of society. Remember that the grass is never greener on the other side, it is greener where you water it.”

Meanwhile, the keynote speaker, Prof. Rhoda Mundi, congratulated the new students, and reminded them that university ground is a place of discovery and development of life-long skills.

She advised the students to freely mingle with each other, make friends among themselves, exchange ideas, skills, and knowledge, that would help them in their academic pursuit and otherwise.

She advised parents not to force their professional or academic interests on the children, but allow them to follow their passion, then provide a guide where and when necessary.

She also encourage parents not to relinquish their responsibilities to the teachers and school management alone, but be significantly involved in the learning experience.
