The Senate has granted first reading to a bill seeking to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act No 26, 2023 to Annex Umuleri General Hospital in order to serve as an outreach center to Federal Medical Center, Onitsha.
On Wednesday the bill titled Federal Medical Centers Act (Amendment) Bill , 2024 (SB. 327) is sponsored by Senator Tony Nwoye representing Anambra North.
According to the details of the bill the second Schedule to the Principal Act of Federal Medical Act will be amended by inserting a new phrase to paragraph “22” to now read; “22” Federal Medical Center, Onitsha with Outreach Center at Umuleri General hospital”.
The Lawmaker in his introductory copy the bill stated the sole aim of the bill is aimed at bringing efficient and quality health care delivery service nearer to the people.
Leader of the Senate Michael Opeyemi Bamidele introduced the bill while the clerk of the Senate Mr. Chinedu Akubueze read its short title.
The bill subsequently scalded first reading after it was adopted by the Senators after it was put to a voice vote presided by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
