The author of Pathways to Effective Entrepreneurship: A Complete Guide to Successful Business, Mazi Chuks Sunday Nwosu, has said that the reality of solving management problem with management books hinged on a research which has shown that regular reading can improve intelligence and lead to innovation and insight.

The writer, who is also a publisher and a management consultant, in a chat with Daily Sun in Lagos, said, “If a CEO develops the attitude of reading, he will have deep insight, knowledge, and sharpen his talents that can help him improve his leadership skills and that of his organisations, especially if he reads and understands the classics, the fundamentals of the subject matter.”

Nwosu, said technologies and ideas might change but fundamentals were always constant, “They do not change, so understanding the basics gives insight into challenges and enables the manager to proffer solutions to the problem or challenge,” he said, adding that reading, especially issue-related books, gives insight into the mechanics of solving problem.

“It broadens your horizons, and enables you to gain perspective for enlightened decisions. Personal experience will not be ruled out. That is why, at the top echelon, acquisition of soft skills, especially problem solving skill, is necessary,” he canvassed.

He noted that the high rate of business failure in Nigeria was due to lack of business plan for most of our businesses. “When you don’t have enough trained hands to manage a business, definitely, it will fail. At times, it is wrong location and government policies. Many a time, people locate their businesses in wrong sites. It affects the survival of the business,” he revealed.

The author, whose title of 503 pages took him seven years, said the book is a comprehensive X-ray on entrepreneurship, management and other topics about effective entrepreneurship. “The book details entrepreneurship and economic development, how to generate good business ideas, establish and manage small business firms, marketing management, financial management and human capital management in small business firms.

“It also mirrors how to cope with the volatility in Nigerian business environment, roles of government in entrepreneurship, how to write business plan and business documentations and application of Internet on entrepreneurship. The target audience is not limited to budding entrepreneurs (start-ups), business practitioners, researchers, academics, undergraduates, and postgraduates’ students in polytechnics
and universities and drivers of economy, but also non-governmental organisations (NGOs),” he explained.

Writing, for the PhD student, started during his masters. “I attempted all group assignments. One day, I stumble on one of the assignments after our graduation. I wondered at the write-up. I said, “This is great! I have to look for all previous lectures and seminar I gave at different fora relating to entrepreneurship, job creation, and self-reliance that made sense. I was inspired to expand the scope based on my experience and training, and, today, we have Pathways to Effective Entrepreneurship: A Complete Guide to successful Business.

He also has another work on e-book format, Boosting your Productivity with 365 Days Management Quotes. “It is management quotes that have to do with every day,” he said. The author is currently working on two other books, which, he hopes, will be presented to the public by the fourth quarter of the year.
