The Benue State Police Command has dislodged a bandits’ camp in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of the state, killing two suspects and recovering arms.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Steve Yabanet, made the disclosure in a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, and made available to newsmen in Makurdi, yesterday.

He explained that the command has continuously intensified efforts to clampdown on bandits in the Sankera axis of the state in the last three months. He said several operations carried out led to the arrest of suspects who have been charged to court, while others were neutralised in the course of exchange of fire. He said arms and ammunition were recovered and many camps dislodged.

He stated that, as part of follow up operations, the Operation Zenda JTF invaded a criminal hideout at Tse Uza, Mbatyula Council Ward, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, on Sunday.

“Upon arrival at the camp, bandits engaged the police in a gun duel to resist invasion into their camp, but were overpowered by the superior fire power of the police team. Two of the bandits received gunshot injuries and have been confirmed dead by a doctor and their bodies deposited at the General Hospital, Ukum, while other suspects escaped.

“Exhibits recovered from the camps include two pistols loaded with ammunition, three locally made shotguns, 13 motorcycles, camouflage uniforms, six walkie-talkies, one Toyota Corolla and one tricycle,” Yabanet said.

The police commissioner, who commended the bravery exhibited by the officers, enjoined the people of Sankera to make available useful information to the police about suspects at large, who may be seen with gunshot injuries. He reiterated his commitment to fight crime in the state, to ensure that criminal elements either repent and turn a new leaf or leave the state.
