The Benue State government has called on residents to take ownership of public infrastructure in their communities, remain vigilant, and report suspicious activities to security agencies in order to protect these assets from vandalisation and theft.

The Principal Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Public Utility, Timothy Chia, made this statement while responding to reported cases of destruction of public property.

Chia, who also warned against drunk driving and speeding, expressed concern over incidents where intoxicated drivers have damaged solar lights recently installed by the government.

Citing a recent incident at Ankpa Quarters – Cathedral Road, the PSA stated that the destruction of government facilities in such a drunken state would not be tolerated, as it poses a substantial threat to the economic well-being of the residents.

He called on community members to take ownership of public property in their areas for their own benefit.

Chia warned that anyone caught destroying such property through reckless driving, theft, or vandalism would be prosecuted according to existing laws and punished accordingly if found guilty.

He urged communities to remain peaceful, emphasising that the government may not consider launching any projects in turbulent areas for security reasons.

He added that his office is collaborating with security agencies and the Office of the Attorney General through Public Order to ensure that those found guilty are sanctioned.

While soliciting the continued support of all stakeholders for the Alia-led government to make life easier in the state, Chia urged the people to contribute to the development process to make Benue a better place for all.
